I too have trained therapy and service dogs and have just joined the local SAR group to get experience without a dog before trying to make the next step of training a dog. My yellow lab Fern has the perfect mental and physical aptitudes to be a search dog but at 4 it is a little too late for her to start. Wish I had had time to try when she was younger. Flashlight search for that valuable lost article revealed nothing. And so I radio'd back to base and had to end the test. A few weeks later I decided to walk the course again and sure enough there was the faded, crumbled, water logged map in a plastic baggie halfway between point 1 and 2. At least I knew my nav wasn't far off... Thank you so much for "Scent of the Missing". I've recommended it as a must read to team members and to others who want to learn something about K9 SAR ; the human and the canine partners of an almost undescribable team. Sorry about your hat…
