Susannah: I enjoyed your book. I respect the fact that you approached each actual search with subtlety, perhaps for the privacy of the victims and their relatives. The chapter about the Columbia loss was extraordinary, and I could feel the perspective of the dogs. I hope that you are well! And Puzzle too of course. (We had a Golden, and we still miss him.) Best to you! ......... Judith

Loved the book and hope you and your furry family are all healthy and happy! I too have trained therapy and service dogs and have just joined the local SAR group to get experience without a dog before trying to make the next step of training a dog.

My yellow lab Fern has the perfect mental and physical aptitudes to be a search dog but at 4 it is a little too late for her to start. Wish I had had time to try when she was younger.

Sorry about your hat...
I had six land nav points to find in 2 hours on a muggy warm summer night in July. The kind that fogs up your glasses the minute you stop. Shortly after finding point #1 I could not find my map!! Flashlight search for that valuable lost article revealed nothing. And so I radio'd back to base and had to end the test. A few weeks later I decided to walk the course again and sure enough there was the faded, crumbled, water logged map in a plastic baggie halfway between point 1 and 2. At least I knew my nav wasn't far off...
Thank you so much for "Scent of the Missing". I've recommended it as a must read to team members and to others who want to learn something about K9 SAR ; the human and the canine partners of an almost undescribable team.

Susannah,

You have written a book that I will describe as pure magic. I am telling all of my friends about it, and that they MUST read it. You, Puzzle, the Poms, and the Cats are amazing!

Thank you for writing this book. Thank you for telling the world what I, and so many others who love dogs, already know... we are blessed that they share their lives with us.

Susannah
Thank you very much for your book. I just happened to find it while looking for books about the 2 pups I just found on the side of the road. They are German Shepard/ Collie Mix they are about 11 months old now and thanks to you I have started them in training to be search and rescue dogs like Puzzle. They are very smart and have great energy. You have inspired me to do something great with the 2 gifts I found in the woods. You are a blessing to everyone. Your book had me laughing and tearing up. Once again Thank you very much.

Susannah
Thank you for putting such wonder and eloquence into your work and your description of the intricies of inter-specific communication into your book. I am thrilled to see folks who interact with working dogs willing to witness to the power of the relationship as part of the power in the work. This work is destined to become a hallmark as a resource for solid information in the field of training and animal behavior communication. I want to contact you about sharing your repertoire in some form with APDT. APDT Association of Pet Dog Trainers, APDT.com is one of the largest educational venues of dog trainers in the world. Our annual conference attendance is well over 1K every year and draws worldwide.
I am the "science advisor" for APDT and seek out new presentors for the science track for the annual conference. I am so thrilled to have discovered your contributions (with a little help from Trisha McConnell).

Please let me know if you would consider presenting at the conference.
